Testing image safely?

Hello

I'd like to test a new image that I built, but have it run entirely in RAM so as to preserve data in the NAND. Is it possible to do this?

I also have a couple of questions about images:

I notice that in /usr/src/switchfin/build_ip01/image_ip01/...
1. uImage* are 1/3 of the size of linux.ext2, since the attached root filesystem is compressed: In this case, what is the point of generating linux.ext2?
2. Even when only choosing option "The default minimal system" in menuconfig, uImage is about 7MB while the equivalent in BAPS is only 2MB: Any idea why?

Thank you.

Re: Testing image safely?

Hi Gilles,

Well you can tftp the new image at certain location in RAM from u-boot
tftp 2000000 uImage
and then boot from RAM
bootm 2000000
This should keep your NAND untouched.

Switchfin is using some scipts from uClinux buidroot.
Just ignore linux.ext2.

BAPS is using packaging system so you can install some packages at run-time.
Me personally haven't tested BAPS.

Best Regards
Dimitar

Re: Testing image safely?

Thanks Dimitar. I'll back up configuration files in /dev/mtdblock2, make sure Uboot's "bootcmd" uses "root=/dev/mtdblock0" and give it a try, then.
